The philosophy of the accounting programme is to generate, inculcate and disseminate accounting, finance, professional and allied knowledge as both pre-requisite and foundation for efficient and effective management of business organizations, public service organizations, non-government organizations and other players in Commerce and Industry.


The objectives of the Accounting programme include:

  • The production of competent but confident academics and professionally qualified finance experts for the financial industries globally;
  • The provision of sufficient intellectual motivation for the academically-minded students to pursue further academic and professional studies in accounting, finance and management studies;
  • The contribution to the National and International pool of supply of modern, dynamic and well trained accounting graduates;
  • To use modern techniques and technologies to train and impact the required skills and knowledge to students admitted into the department;
  • To produce well grounded graduate and professional accountants that would be able to contribute to national and international debates on burning issues affecting the accounting profession.



In addition to the general University requirements, the department shall apply the following in considering admissions of students to the B.Sc. degree in Accounting.

  1. Admission through the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Candidate for admission into the four-year degree programme in Accounting must possess at least five (5) credit passes in the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE); General Certificate of Education (GCE), Ordinary level (O/L); National Business and Technical Educational Board (NABTEB), or their equivalents, which must include Mathematics, English Language and Economics or any other social science subject at not more than two sittings. In addition, candidates must have minimum acceptable pass mark in UTME.

  1. Admission through Direct Entry (3-year full-time degree programme)
  2. Passes in Accounting and Economics in the Advanced Level (A/L) of General Certificate of Education (GCE), Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB), the National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB) or Joint University Preparatory Examination Board (JUPEB). In addition, candidates must possess at least five credit passes in WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or GCE, including English Language and Mathematics. The results at both levels must be obtained at not more than two sittings.
  3. Diploma in a relevant discipline, at not lower than credit level, obtained from a recognized university; or National Diploma, at not lower than Upper Credit, from a recognized polytechnic or College of Technology. In addition, candidates must possess five credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics at the WAEC, GCE (O/L), or NABTEB.
