Goal of the programme

The goal of Computer Science programmes is to offer programmes to diverse audience:

  1. Students interested primarily in computing;
  2. Students interested primarily in applying computing to some other field of study, and
  3. Students who wish to include computing as part of their general education. They have in common a desire to provide a program that will give the student a broad range of experience in computer science as well as the depth of education that will be needed in the student’s later career, whether professional or academic.

PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

The Department of Computer Science offers a programme of courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. The courses are designed to provide training in the theory and application of Computer Science. Thus, it emphasizes the importance of the underlying theory of various branches of Computer Science and provides a wide spectrum of application areas for the students.

Objectives

The objectives of the Bachelor degree programme are as follows:

  1. To create in students the awareness of and enthusiasm for computer science and its applications;
  2. To involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying;
  3. To provide a broad and balanced foundation in computer science knowledge and practical skills;
  4. To develop in student through an education in computer science a range of transferable applications skills of information technology to all aspect of human endeavours;
  5. To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of computer in an industrial, economic, technological and social context;
  6. To provide students with knowledge and skills for further studies in computer science or multi-disciplinary studies involving computer science and Information Technology; and
  7. To prepare students for careers in the computing and information technology industry.

 

Social context of work in computer science

Interestingly, Computer science involves applied reasoning using both art and scientific knowledge. However, the knowledge of computer science can also be misused, such as in creating computer viruses, computer hacking, and “phishing” for private information.

They have in common a desire to provide a program that will give the student a broad range of experience in computer science as well as the depth of education that will be needed in the student’s later career, whether professional or academic.

The programme incorporates a six-month industrial work experience.

            HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME

The Department of Computer Sciences, Wellspring University, Benin was established in 2009/2010 academic year, following the licensing of the University by the Federal Government of Nigeria in November 2009. The department graduated the first set of students in the 2012/2013 session and since then graduated over forty students up till 2015/2016 session.

 

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS IN THE COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAMME

The admission of candidates into the Computer Science programme is done in any one of the following ways:

  • Through University Matriculation Examination (UME)

In addition to an acceptable pass in UME, candidate seeking admission into B.Sc. Degree programme in Computer Science must have not less than ordinary level credit passes in at least five (5) SSCE /GCE, SSCE /NECO (or acceptable equivalents) subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and two other science subjects at not more than two sittings from Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Economics and Further Mathematics. Candidates are, in addition, required to submit themselves for a written examination and oral interview before admission is finally offered to deserving candidates.

  • 3-year full-time degree programme (Direct Entry)

Candidates seeking direct entry admission into the Computer Science programme must in addition to satisfying the University matriculation requirements, possess:

  1. A minimum of two Advanced level passes in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or Higher School Certificate (HSC) or its recognized equivalent qualifications at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include Mathematics and any other science subjects.
  2. At least a credit pass in Diploma from a recognized institution in Data Processing, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other related disciplines.
  3. Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least Credit level pass in Mathematics and any other science subject from a recognized College of Education. In addition, Candidates should have at least an overall Merit pass.
