Mass Communication


We are committed to excellence in both teaching and research. 


The department of mass communication offers a four (4) year programme for the award of B.Sc Mass Communication.  Six (6) months out of the four year study in the university is for industrial training.  It is to enable the students gain practical experience in various relevant fields in journalism.  The students also are expected to visit media houses from time to time to gain media exposure apart from classroom experience.  It is expected of the students to write a research based project in their 400 level on any topic area that revolve around their course of study or area of interest. It is a precondition for the award of B.Sc in Mass Communication upon successful completion.



  • To offer professionally oriented undergraduate programme for the aspiring Nigerian Journalists, Communicators, Broadcasters, Public Relations Officers, Advertising Practitioners and Cinematographers as well as Book Publishers.


  • To train and/or retrain Nigerian Journalists, Communicators, Broadcasters, Public Relations Officers, and Advertising Practitioners as well as Book Publishers for leadership positions in the mass media organizations in the world.



  • To raise and sustain the professional status of journalism in Nigeria.



  • To bridge the divergent perspectives of news gathering and dissemination.


  • To provide the Mass Communication students with the opportunity to master the art of communication with the audience that transcends all disciplines – whether in writing or broadcasting or online medium. It also includes newscasting or writing a speech for a company Chief Executive Officer, or writing advertising or public relations copy to sell or promote a product to the audience.



  • To instill in the Mass Communication students the ability to respect deadlines and work under constant pressure.


  • To train and encourage Mass Communicators to be effective communicators by being able to think quickly, research creatively, and write or broadcast concisely to the mass audience.



  • To train media workers that would act as the trustee of the public trust that would be socially responsible to the communities they serve by being accurate, fair, balanced and objective in the reportage of societal issues.


  • To produce Mass Communicators who will continue to protect the basic principles of the people’s right to know as the fourth branch of government or the Fourth Estate of the Realm.



  • It is expected that at the end of the degree programme, the mass communication graduates should be proficient in social research and hands-on media technologies.


  • At the end of the degree programme, it is expected that the graduate should be equipped enough to establish his or her own newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, public relations and advertising agencies as well as a printing house for book publishing.




Admission through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

A minimum of five (5) credits in West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO) Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or in the General Certificate Examinations Ordinary Level (GCE, O/L) or their equivalents. The five (5) credits must include English Language, Mathematics, and Literature in English and must be obtained in not more than two sittings. An acceptance UTME score is also required.


Direct Entry candidates must obtain the professional Diploma in Mass Communication of any University approved by the Senate of the University with not less than a GPA of 3.0 or obtain a Diploma in Mass Communication from approved and recognized Polytechnics in Nigeria with at least a merit pass on Graduation. Candidates with GCE Advanced Level may be considered for Direct Entry except that such candidate will be required to spend 4years as UTME candidates.
