DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

Graduates of microbiology have a wide range of career opportunities. In addition to their need in the overall improvement of health care delivery in the local governments, states and Federal establishments, microbiologists are in high demand in areas such as Medical diagnostic and research laboratories, pharmaceutical industries and research centres, epidemiological and disease control centres, quality control units of food, beverages, textiles and leather –tanning industries; Biodegradation of industrial wastes in government and private sector environmental protection agencies, genetic engineering / biotechnological research institutes, brewing industries, oil companies, bioenergy industry, agriculture, etc.

The department offers a degree programme leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science (Microbiology)

 

Philosophy

To produce well nurtured graduate that will be in a position to contribute to the advancement of knowledge at local, national and global levels. Therefore, the programme in microbiology is designed to enable students to acquire broad– based knowledge of general Microbiology, in addition to those of specialized branches of microbiology. The knowledge and skills acquired will then be employed in solving problems in the energy sector, medical/veterinary diagnosis, agriculture, biotechnology, protection of the environment, in food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, brewing, alcohol and diary factories, as well as in the position of scientific officers in relevant research institutions. The degree programme consists of course works with relevant practical exercises, tutorials, project reports and industrial work experience to enable students practice the acquired knowledge by themselves. For this reason, the courses are made to help the students acquire up-to-date knowledge in relevant areas of microbiological application. In general, the programme in microbiology is designed to produce graduates who can use the knowledge acquired for self-actualization and sustenance.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS INTO THE PROGRAMME

The Four-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (UTME Programme)

Admission into the four-years degree programme in Microbiology must satisfy the University Matriculation requirements, including five (5) credit passes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English Language at the West African Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO), Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or their recognized equivalents in not more than two (2) sittings.

Note: The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Subjects written should include: – Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics.

The Three-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)

For admission into the three-year degree programme (Direct Entry), candidates must in addition to the requirements in A above possess:

  1. A minimum of two (2) Advanced Level (“A” Level), passes in General Certificate of Education (GCE) or its recognized equivalent at not more than two (2) sittings in the following science subjects- Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and Physics in not more than two sittings. Also, candidates with at least credit grade pass in the Diploma examination in related disciplines from any recognized University.
  2. Diploma from other recognized universities with at least an upper credit level pass in the areas listed in B (ii) above.
  • Ordinary National Diploma (OND) with at least an upper credit level pass in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT)/Food Technology/ relevant subject area from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology.
  1. Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least a lower credit level pass in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) or Food Technology in the relevant subject area from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology
  2. Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least a credit level pass in Biology from a recognized College of Education. In addition candidates should have at least an overall merit level pass.
